North-east Valley.—At Friday night's meeting a petition was read from several ratepayers in Calton terrace drawing attention to the fact that, as the lease of church property was expiring, it was a good time to approach the trustees to get them to grant 20ft of road line to Calton terrace, the some as the owner of the adjoining property had done, whioh would make the road 40ft wide, beginning at the Town Belt. The mayor and the town olerk were instructed to call upon the secretary to the trustees in reference to the matter, and report to the next meeting of the Counoil.— The Mayor explained that with regard to Fine Hill road he had waited on the town olerk of the City Counoil and
urged upon him the advisability to repair the lower portion of the said road, and that the town olerk had acknowledged the necessity of the work and had promised to get the Council to consider the matter, and suggested that the borough olerk should write to the City Counoil. A letter had been written, and a reply received, that tho City Counoil did not intend to do anything in the matter. He recommended the councillor representing the ratepayers interested to suggest to them the advisability of petitioning the City Counoil direct.—A letter from the City Connoil re Ocean Beaoh preservation was received, and the mayor was appointed the borough's representative at the conference announoed. —Mr Donald Gray wrote stating that he had leased over sixty aores of land in Kelvin Grove, and a house was being built for him there, but the road at present w&b almost impassable in wet weather; and seeing the amount of rates paid, he asked that something be done. Referred to the Works Committee to report to next meeting. r-On Cr Shoet's motion it ,waa resolved—"That the inspector be inBtruoted to report at next meeting of the Works Committee as to the state of the creek running through tho borough, with a view of ascertaining what obstacles (if any) exist to retard the flow of water, and aleo to report if any nuisance exists in the creek likely to be injurious to the health of the district."—Cr s'hort moved—"That this Counoil urge upon the Government to carry out the Bill referring to gorse growing on private property, as it is getting a perfect pest in some parts of this borough ; and a copy oi the same be sent to the Minister of Lands and tho district member (Mr Dawson)." This alao was carried.
