WORK AND WAGES.
At the annual meeting of the Amalgamated Sooiety of Railway Servants held at Christchurch last night, the chairman alluded to last year being a period of quiescence and steady recovery from the rude shook the sooiety received during the first year of their existence through tbe failure of the labor movements in 1890. Notice of motion was given to amend the constitution to allow of its being worked with greater facility. The Executive were recommended to endeavor to obtain a conference in Wellington for the purpose of devising and adopting the best method of insurance; also to change the place for holding the annual Conference from Auckland to Wellington, provided the consent of the Auckland branch oan be obtained ; and to urge upon'the Government the desirability of passing the Conciliation and Arbitration Bill,
The Knights of Labor at Masterton have passed the following resolution: this assembly view with alarm the influx of Chinese traders and workers into Wairarapa, and that, iu the interests of the working men of New Zealand, they consider it undesirable to encourage Chinese traders or workers of any description, and this assembly would ask the assistance and co-operation of Bister assemblies and friends of labor generally in urging upon the Government the necessity of increasing the poll tax on all Chinese entering the colony from LlO to L 100."
