THE TELEPHONE EXCHANGE
Wa understand that, iu accordance with a promise nude to Parliament last session by the Postmaster General, the introduction of females into the telephone exchanges will begin a? from the Ist prox,, when four young ladies will be employed at eaoh of the centres of the colony—Auokland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedir. The delay in not employing females'earlier has been occasioned by the want of sufficient accommodation at the various bureaux. It is the intention of the Hon. Mr Ward at an early date to place females in all the te'ephone exchanges in the colony, and alio in time to employ them in the Postal Department as letter-sorters; and in both capacities it is expected that they will prove thoroughly expert. We are aware that a lady has been engaged for a number of years in the Auckland telephone exchange, and the subscribers are unanimously of opinion that she is the most expert operator in that city.
