News has been received from Sydney c f the death of Aleo Sutherland, the wellknown jockey, who rode Necklace in most of her engagements. Tho Committee of tho Wanganui Jockey Club have disqualified all the horses, trainers, jockeys, and owners that took part in the unauthorised race meeting held at Castlecliff on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day ; and there is some talk of disqualifying all who took part in the Hematangi (Manawatu) meeting, On tho second day of the Gore races Waitangi (10.9) won the Hurdle Race, beating Robin (10.5), Justice (10.7), and two others, paying a dividend of L 3 4s. In the Racing Club Handicap, Assyrian King (8 6) won by half a length from Exile (7.0); Danville (7 9), who was favorite, being third. Dividend, L 3 4s. Native won tho Tiot, paying LlO 4j ; Billy the Croydon Handicap, returning a dividend oi L 3 4j a protest against him for crooked running being dismissed ; the Selling Race fell to Black Jack—dividend L 3 7s; Aprhi Moi (8.10) beat Colliugwood (7 5) in the Shorts; a d The Chief won the Consolation. Specu” ration was brisk, Messrs Mason and Roberts putting L 1,823 through the machine, making a total of L 3,539 for the meeting. The lawn tennis match played yesterday at Carisbrook between the Carisbrook and Canterbury Clubs resulted in a decisive defeat for the home team. The scores were as follow : Singles—F. Wilding beat A. E. Harraway, 7—5, 6—o, 6—4. Doubles— F. Wilding and G. H. N, Helmoro beat Dr Batohdor and H. Macneil, jun., 6—2, 6—4, 6—2, Totals: Canterbury, 37; Carisbrook, 17. At a meeting held ia the Harbor Board offices last evening it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Mr Erridge, seconded by Mr Hooper, to hold a regatta in the Upper Harbor. The following were nominated ns tho regatta committee: Messrs W. J. Maclaughlin, M. Bell, J. L. Gillies, W, L. Hooper, W. Fullerton, W. Mondie, P. Hodgkins, W. M'Govran, P, Sutherland, F, Platts, Bauchop, A. Hunter, Brent, Sligo, Erridge, Newstubb, Waters, White, Myers, Purdie, M’Lellan, Hogan, and Captain Anderson. Mr A. Purdie was appointed secretary, and Captain Anderson treasurer. It was decided to leave the questions of fixing the date of the regatta and determining time allowance to yachts to the Committee,
At a meeting of Christchurch owners and trainers of trotting horses tho opinion was expressed that owners are not fairly treated by the suburban clubs. Owners are dissatisfied with the inadequacy of the ttalvca aud the general conduct of the meetings.
