TEMPERANCE CONFERENCE.

Yesterday afternoon a conference was held at the Leviathan Temperance Hotel between delegates of the New Zealand Alliance and officials and representatives of the Prohibition Leagues of Sydenham, Oamarn, and Dunedin. Tho Alliance was represented by Sir William Fox, K C.M.G., Mr Glover (honorary president and vicepresident of the Alliance respectively), and Mr Walker (Alliance lecturer and organiser) ; and the Leagues by Messrs Graham, Seth Smith, Rev, L. M. Isitt, Messrs Begg, Jago, A. S. Adams ; Mr Tennyson Smith being also present by invitation, Sir William Fox was voted to tho ohair, and Mr Walker to act as secretary to the Conference,

Sir William Fox stated the object of the meeting to be to confer upon mutual interests. The following resolutions were unanimously adopted : —“ This Conference of of the Alliance Executive, with officials and representatives of the Sydenham, Oamaru, and Dunedin Prohibition Leagues, having fully discussed the relative claims of local and of colonial and legislative temperance work, and also the Alliance modes of working respecting the two latter, and the raising of funds for local and for colonial work respectively, agree that (1) it is expedient that the modes of operation hitherto employed by the Alliance Executive be continued; (2) this Conference see no other way of meeting strictly local demands upon temperance effort and liberality than by the united action ol all local temperance workers, , and

their raising separate funds to meet local requirements; (3) it is expedient that the Alliance continues to raise funds as hitherto only for colonial, as distinct from purely local work ; and that in the opinion of this Conference the Alliance should favorably consider any proposals for financial relations which may be mutually advantageous from any local temperance organisations; (4) this Conference cordially commend the colonial and legislative work of the Alliance to generous moral and financial support, and consider that the most cordial relations should be maintained between all local temperance bodies and the Alliance,”

It was stated that an open conference, to which all temperance friends would be welcomed, will take placo at the Y.W.O.A. Rooms this evening, at eight o’clock. A cardial veto of thanks to Sir William Fox for calling the Conference and for presiding was unanimously adopted, and closed the meeting.
