OTAGO v. CANTERBURY. The interprovincial match between teams representing Canterbury and Otago was begun this morning at 11 o’clock at the Carisbrook Ground. The weather was fairly favorable, and the ground appeared in excellent condition, though, in reality, it was somewhat dead—a distinct disadvantage to the visiting team, who are accustomed to a much faster ground. The umpiring was undertaken by Mr H. Rose, (Otago) and Mr T. 1), Oondell (Canterbury). The teams were captained by L. A. Cuff and F. Harper respectively. The toss was won by the visiting team, who chose to go in first, G. Helmore and A. Harman went to the wickets, and faced the bowling of J. C. Lawton and A. Downes. Lawton opened the ball, and Helmore scored a couple to leg in the first over. Two maidens followed, Harman drove Downes to the on for 2, After two more maidens, Helmore was clean bowled by Lawton, and the score stood 4—l—2, H. Da Maus filled the vacancy. After a succession of maidens Harman put up another 2, and a leg-bye was secured off Lawton. Da Maus put Downes over the boundary to squareleg and broke his egg with a 4, and in the same over secured another couple in the slips. More maidens ensued, and the same batsman scored a single in the same place off Downes. Lawton’s record stood nino maidens out of ten overs when De Mans snicked him to leg for 2. In Lawton’s next over De Maus was caught by Johnston at mid-on, 16—2—9. His place was taken by T. W. Reese, who retired Ibw in his first over from Lawton. W, Cooke now went to the wickets. Harman made a single off Downes, and after another maiden from Lawton Cooke put Downes very neatly to leg for a couple, and scored a single to the off in the same over. Harman added two more to bis score in the slips off Downes, and 20 went up on the board. Cooke snicked Lawton to leg for 2, and iu the next over Harman sent Downes to leg for 4. Fisher was now put on iu place of Downes, and Harman put him to 1° ~ for a couple in his first over. Thirty up, Cooke was clean bowled by Lawton in the following over. 30—4—5, L, A. Cuff (captain) filled the vacancy. Harman drove Fisher on for 2 and snicked a single in the same over. Cuff and Harman each scored a single off Fisher’s next over. Cuff added a double and a single to his score off the same bowler —4O up—and another double off Lawton. A single to each batsman was followed by a double to Cuff off Lawton. Another single off Fisher brought Harman's score up to 20, and Fisher’s next ball took Cuff’s wicket, 47—5—10. A. Labatt went to the wicket and scored a single off his first ball from Fisher. The same batsman got another single off Lawton, and the same to Harman off Lawton brought 50 up on the board. The same batsman snicked Fisher to leg for 2, and sent him again to square-leg for 3 in the same over. Another single off Lawton to leg was added to Harman’s score, and Downes took the ball again from Fisher, Harman got another single from Downes, Lawton had tke misfortune to lore one of bis finger nails in stopping a ball in the slips, but continued to bowl. Harman put him away to the on for a single, and the first bye was scored daring the same over, In the next over Harman put Downes cleverly to square leg for 4 and then to leg for 3 60 up. An adjournment was made for lunch at one o’clock, the score standing five wickets down for 66.

After luncheon play was rerumed shortly after two o’clock. Labatt stole a single off Downes, and cut Lawton cleverly for 2, following up with sending the same bowler to square-leg for another couple—7o up. Harman made a single off Downes, and Labatt sent the same bowler to leg for 2 and drove him to tho off for 3. After a maiden to each bowler, Labatt out Lawton cleanly for a single, and Harman drove him to the on for 2 and placed him in the same direction for a single-80 up, bringing his own score up to 40. Downes bowled a maideoi and the first ball of Lawton’s next over took Labatt’s wicket. 81—6—13, J. Lawrence succeeded Labatt, and cut his first ball from Lawton for a single. Two more maidens in succession, and Lawrence sent Downes into the slips for a couple. A bye for 4 in the next over was followed by 2 secured by Harman to leg off Lawton—--90 up. Lawrence cut Downes for a single, which would have been doubled had it not been for Bell’s smart fielding at cover-point. Each batsman scored a single in the next over. Lawrence gave Bell a splendid chance in the following over off Lawton, which was not missed, and be gave place to F. Wilding. 93—7—5, Wilding was cleaned bowled by Lawton’s second ball without adding to the soore. E. Bates took his place, and two maidens followed. In the next over Harman cut Downes, and went for a single, which resulted in Bates being smartly run out. 93—7—5, H. Ogier supplied the vacancy. Harman scored q single off Lawton and another with a fine cut off Downes, Ogier scored a similar single off the same bowler. A maiden followed, and Downes in the following over clean bowled Harman, the team being all disposed of for 96. Harman, who was top scorer with 45, played a good innings, which was not, however, conspicuous for bad luck. His wicket was very closely sbqyed *oyera\ times, and he qpght opce. have been given out Jeg-beforp. One of the must conspicuous features of tne innings was the fielding of Johnston, who was playing third man; and' Lawton’s bowling wm much

admired, remark also being called for by Williams’s smartness at the wicket and Bell at point. Following is the score:

He did not stay long, however, for after making a brace Labatt dean bowled him. 6—2—2 was an inauspicious beginning, and Bell came with the hope of putting a different phase on the complexion of the game. Baker, who bad been playing with the utmost caution up to this point, opened bis shoulders to Wilding and lifted him to the boundary, for 4, No sooner had 20 appeared than Wilding bowled Baker. Bell was partnered by Johnston, and the Carisbrook representative made some pretty cuts. At 36 Bates went on in place of Wilding, and in the next over Labatt dismissed Bell with a shooter.
