SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

TURF CHIT-CHAT. The match for L 25 a side between Miss Mack (9.8) and Le R-;i (7 0) came off on the Oamaru Racecourse yesterday. The mare was ridden by Walter Robertson, and in the absence of T. Buddicombe the mount on Mr Wise's horse waß entrusted to Marks. When the flag fell Le Roi had a two lengths' advantage, and led for about five furlongs, when the mare joined him, and the two raced together until half a mile from home. Robertson then gave Miss Mack her head, and the race was over, for Le Roi refused to answer to hin rider's call, and he was pulled up. The time for the mile and a-quarter was 2min 24i<sec. A good deal of money changed hands over the event. Some of the North Island turf metallicians have big engagements in respect of forthcoming event;. Messrs Yuille and Nathan inform me that they have a L3OO book on the Wellington Cup, a LSOO double on the Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup, and L3OO straight out on the Newmarket Handicap. Investors on the Australian events are guaranteed ruling quotations on the other side. With this week's ' Canterbury Times' is published an almanac showing the results of all the principal racing events in New Zealand and Australia, and of the interprovincial football and Cricket matches, in addition to the world's sporting records. As the almanac is compiled up to date it is certain to prove of great value to all interested in sporting matters. It now seems to be generally understood in turf circles that Mr Driver has no intention of seeking reappointment as itirter to the Dunedin Jockey Club. The club will, thereforo, have to seek a successor, and popular opinion seems to point to Mr John Grindley as the moat suitable man. In aoting for a number of the country cluts Mr Grindley has given satisfaction; and, apparently, be possesses all the necessary qualifications for the position. From Cromwell comes the intelligence of the death of Colleen Dhas, winner of several trotting races in Central Otago this season. This is the horse that was piloted by a lady (Miss Field). Colleen Dhas ran oeoond at Roxburgh on New Year's D*y, but was evidently unwell, and died the fol lowing morning from inflammation. Dunedin Cup weights are due on Monday, and a good deal of curiosity ia felt as to how Mr Dowse will handicap the mixed field engaged in oar big autumn event. As Freedom may, to all intents and purposes, be considered withdrawn from the race, the field is left without one first-class horse in it, taking a line merely by this season's form, Dudu has been taken up again, and is being trained at Riccarton for her Northern engagements. Acceptances for the Wellington Cup are not due till Friday next, but in the meantime J may express a preference for Boulanger, who ran a good seoond to Cynisoa for this raoe last January, Mr Paul's horse is now nearly a stone better than he was. • The Admiral

At the Hororata meetiog yesterday the Hororata Cup, one mile and a-half, was won by Coinage (7.7), with Quibble (8 2) second, and Bay Ebg (8.13) third. The time was 2min43£sec, and the dividend Lll 4a. The St. Leger—Lovebird oolt, Bold to Mr Fatterßon at the recent Wellington Park sale, has been repurchased by its former owner (Mr L. D. Nathan), who has sold the Ingomar—Steppe oolt to Mr Morrin. The principal event at the Queenatown meeting yesterday was the Lake County Cup, of 60 sovs, one mile and a-half, which resulted thus: Wild Wave (7.10) 1, Ben (9.8) 2, Plunger (7.4) 3 Three others started, and the race was won by a length in the fair time of 2 43. The winner paid a dividend of L 6 15s. Skip (12eeo) won the Two-mile Trot, paying a dividend of L 4 15s; and Huia (8 3) beat Ben (9.10) and (Jlenoalrn (8.5) in the Publicans' Handioip, of'one mile', the dividend being L 5 3a. In the Hack frace Milord pnjy got third to Chief and Bloomsbury.
