CHESS CONGRESS.
At the Chess Congress yesterday in the first match Malcolm met Siedeberg, the former adopting the French defence. Malcolm’s sixth move was weak, and his opponent immediately taking advantage of it obtained a crushing attack, winning the exchange, and on the twenty-fourth move a clear piece, which left him a rook to the good. Malcolm seeing his game was hopeless thereupon resigned, This game lasted only Ih 40min. Hookham played the Ruy Lopez against Trimble, but carrying on his attack indifferently he allowed the latter, who played in the early part of the game with good judgment, to acquire about the fifteenth move the ! preferable game. Later on Trimble inadvertently lost a knight, together with all the previously gained advantage in position. Losing another piece still later, further resistance became hopeless, and Tiimble resigned on his 41st move. The encounter between Littlejohn and Barnes resolved itself into the three knights’ game, and was very evenly contested up to tbo 33rd move, when Carnes had perhaps a trifle the advantage. At the 34th move black ventured on an unsound counter attack, which allowed white to come out with a pawn ahead. Eventually Barnes lost his knight, and resigned at the 54th move, Baker played the Zukertort opening, KltoK 83, against Ashton, The game was very indifferently played on noth sides. On the 22nd move Ashton gained a pawn, but failed to follow up the advantage, allowing his opponent to regain a pawn on the 30th move. Bakewell gradually obtained the superior position, and Ashton resigned on the 44th move. To enable Hookham to leave for the South by the Manapouri on Thursday, his game with Jowitt was commenced to-night in advance of the ordinary fixtures. Hookham had the move, and played the Ruy Lopez, his favorite opening. The game has proceeded to the 25fch move, and the position is fairly even.
