RE RANGER CAMPBELL.

TO THI HD ITOII. Sib,—ln view of the recent questions propounded in the House concerning tois redoubtable ranger, it will become pretty plain to most people that the thing is going a trifle too far.

Aa far as 1 can see the appointment was a pure “ job,” although it can be urged in its favor that the appointee had already filled SVecu{T;T>ut surely the Hon. Thomas Fergus understands what a “job” is. Most people, 1 fancy, look upon it as au attendant upon the exaltation of common men to Ministerial positions, an evil existing always, sometimes to a lesser, sometimes to a greater degree ; but it ill becomes a man like Mr Fergus—a member of the late Ministry—to find fault with “job” appointments, What says the old adage: “ Set a thief to catch a thief 1 ’’ Political rancour must run very high before it overcomes all the gentlemanly instincts of a man’s nature sufficiently to enable him to condescend to unfold the past of a man’s life, as Mr Fergus has done in the case of Ranger Campbell. I know nothing of tho chargee—Whether they be true or false—but I do know that it is base in the extreme of any man to prostitute bis position by holding np to tho ridicule of the country the past mistakes of a man’s life. Granting, even, that the charges brought are true, let Mr Fergus remember that some day the Nemesis of retribution might get on bis own trail.—l am, etc., Tam Arte Qcam Marts, Dunedin, July 10.
