BRIEF MENTION.
The Czarina and Czarewitch visit Paris in August, and subsequently the Czarina will visit England. An agent of Baron Hirsoh is travelling in Southern Russia, with a view of studying the Jewish colonies there, A o >llision occurred in the Bortzenburg tunnel, on the Berlin-Hamburg railway, So far as is known at present, only three persons were injured. Excessive heat continues throughout Germany. A waterspout broke over Soldin, Provii.ee of Brandenburg, destroying the crops. The fear of a Navajo rising is increasing. The Navajos are a tribe of Indians (the famouß Shoshones and Apaohes) occupying a reservation in New Mexico and Arizona. They number nearly 10,000. A Treaty of Commerce between Spain and the United States has been Bigned, and comes into operation in September. Captain Yerney has been removed from the deputy-lieutenantship of Buckingham. At the Crystal Palace the Handel Festival of 1891 was brought to a close. Twentyfour thousand people attended the performance of 'The Messiah.' Mr Gladstone is improving in health. The death is announced of Sir George Maoleiry, at the age of 82. The Collector of Customs at Port Albert (Melbourne) telegraphs that the captain of a coasting vessel reports that a ship is ashore off Port Albert. Wreckage is coming ashore, but a searoh party sent out found no trace of the vessel or signs of life. It is feared that all on board were lost. The estate of the late William Norman, of Christchurch, has been sworn at under L 40.000. Tbe Dunedin Hospital returns for last week were:—Admissions fifteen, discharges seventeen. There was one death—John Murray. The official visitors of the Whau Lunatic Asylum (Messrs Cooper and Ewington) are conducting an inquiry into alleged ill-treat-ment of patients by warders in that institution. The entries for the Poultry, Pigeon, and Dog Show so far number about 1,100, but others are expected by post. The number in the various classes is not at present procurable.
* 'Mr C. Mahoney is about to resign the second mastership of the Albany street School in order to accept a position in an insurance office in Southland. We understand that an information charging perjury is to be laid as a result of one of the recent book cases.
