PENINSULA LICENSING COMMITTEE.

TO TSB BDITOB. Sir,—l am sorry to further take up your space on the above subject, but think it only my duty in self-defence to reply to “Resident’s” letter in your Saturday night’s 188 “ Residen t” says that “the argument that it is better to have a licensed house that is not required than the possibility of a fly-grog shop, is amusing.” Perhaps it is, Mr “ Resident,” but if so why say it ? Yon know I never said it is, or is not required. “ Resident ” knows perfectly well what I said and what I meant. He further says that the facts of the men raining themselves are notorious, and well known to mo. Now, sir, it seems that “ Resident ” wishes people to believe that I am an advocate for drink, etc. I know not and care not who “Resident” is, but if he will kindly give bis name, as he has sent me the names of the “ drunkards,” I will leave the public to judge who has done most for or against the drinking habits. I have received from “Resident” the names he kindly sent me of those who have been ruined by drink, and am no little astonished to see names in the list of people I never heard of tasting drink. The. very first on the list I never heard of spending one shilling on drink, and “ Resident ” knows it was otherwise that he lost his piece of ground. Another one has been dead about six years,

and left a farm to his widow $ I never saw that man under the influence of drink. Another has still the ground that he got at the beginning of the settlement, and money invested besides; and several in the long list 1 never heard of being in a public-house in the district. But all this is beside the question. 1 question very much if “ Resident ” has the interest of the district much at heart. If he has he never would have called in question the few remarks 1 made at the licensing meeting.—l am, etc., Adam Nichol, Chairman Peninsula Licensing Committee, Anderson Bay, June 22.
