"LUMPER'S" LETTERS.
w ran BDITOB. Sib, —Another characteristic effusion from "Lumper" has appeared, but the letter on "Democracy" surpasses all his former efforts. I challenge anyone to make either good English or good sense out of the first sentence. " Lumper " then gives us his idea of an oligarch. A K.C.M.G.-ship, faultlessly fitting Windsor uniform, and au eyegiasß are the requisites he considers necessary. What ambition ! He then makes a number of rambling statements about Acts of Parliament, Judge Edwards, and the Railway Commissioners, which tend to prove an affirmative answer to his concluding question "Are democracies a failure ?" Imagine New Zealand under an oligarchal government ; the Hon. Richard Seddon, dressed in "Lumper's" oligarchal necessaries, autocratically refusing even to promise grants! What would become of us if our governors had not to cajole and conciliate the eleotors ? Then remember the glorious freedom of the Press, "Lumper." Under an oligarchy it would be absolutely impossible for letters expressing opinions on the powers that be, as yours do, to appear in the public Press. Yet for that reason alone I would be prepared to welcome a change from demooracy. —I am, etc., Athos. Dunedin, May 29.
