Auokland .. .. 132,612 130,379 Taranaki .. .. 21,816 17,999 Havrks'sßay .. 28,301 24,668 WelliDgton .. .. 96,289 77,536 Marlborough .. .. 12,835 11,113 Nelson.. .. •.. 34,130 30,203 Westland .. .. 16.282 15,931 Canterbury .. .. 128,092 121,400 Otago.. - .. 152,818 149,164 This does not include the islands and lighthouse population, etc. It will be seen that nearly half the total increase of the population of the colony is claimed by Wellington and Taranaki. This bears out the Registrar-General's prediction that if there was an abnormal increase in any particular district it would be found to be on the west coast of the North Island.
