THEN AND NOW.
70 THE EDITOR. Sir,— l notice that at the recent meeting of Chamber of Commerce that Mr W. B. Reynolds blamed Sir fi. Atkinson for the Otago Central Railway not being farther pushed on. It is very amusing to find how the bon, gentleman took care to forget that it was his own late colleagues who prerented the prosecution of the railway no later than 1889, Sir H. Atkinson visited the line early in that year, and, as a result, brought down a Bill for the purpose of poshing on the construction of the railway by setting apart 25 per cent, of the rents of the runs through which this line would pass, and every member of the present Government in the House, with the exception of the Hon, J. M'Keuzie, voted against the second reading of the Bill. Can Mr Reynolds not find a little time to abuse Messrs Ballance, Cadman, Seddon, W. P. Reeves, and Co. ? Perhaps the most disgraceful thing of all was the now Premier, after first lauding the measure, voting against it at last,—l am, etc,, The Belt. Dunedin, May 2.
