The ‘ Standard ’ infers that riots will take place in France, Spain, and Austria tomorrow (May Day) in connection with the mass meetings of workmen which have been called. A number of Anarchists have arrived in Turin and Milan, in Italy, and it is said that they are inciting the soldiers to shoot their officers. FAILURE OF A STRIKE. BERLIN, April 30 The strike of miners in Westphalia for shorter hours has resulted in a signal failure. SPLIT AMONG MASTER BAKERS. ADELAIDE, May 1. (Received May 1,1891, at 11 a.m.) A split has occurred among the master bakers here on the question of freedom of contract. The majority agreed to recognise the principle. THE SHEARERS’ TROUBLE. BRISBANE, May 1. It is stated that the unionists are anxious to have the dispute settled, and are willing to leave the matter to six disinterested persons chosen from members of the Government, pastoralists, and unionists. The pastoralists are willing to confer with the men if freedom of contract is admitted.
