Parliament now stands formally prorogued till the 27th inst.

The Minister of Mines telegraphed to Mr Hutchison, M.H.R., last night, stating that public business requires his immediate presence in Wellington, and in consequence his visit to Dunedin is indefinitely postponed. Mr Hutchison haß written the Minister suggesting certain works that might in the meantime be undertaken by the unemployed. The following candidates from the Otago University have passed the preliminary medical examination:—W. J. Baird, J. R. Harris, A. S. Marr. W. M. Macdonald pasßed in logic, W. J. Baird passed in French. A. R. Falconer will be recommended for the Grey-Russell Scholarship, and A. H. Adams for the Scott Scholarship. Chancellor Von Caprivi states that the German South-west African colonies will be ceded to Great Britain unless the AngloHamburg syndicate obtain the necessary capital. The Buenos Ayres Government have deoided to issue paper money on a metallio basis.
