Messrs A. Thomson and J. Mill, J.P.s., presided at the Port Chalmers Police Court this morning. Charles Edwin Methan, one of the crew of the Rimutaka, pleaded guilty to smupgiing five and a-half pounds of tobacco. Mr Bowen, on behalf of the Customs, elected to sue for L 5 Bs, being the treble valne. Their Worships, in giving their decision, said that petty smuggling was now becoming of frequent occurrence, but they thought the present case would be met by a fine of L3loa, being double the value of the tobacco, in default, fourteen days' imprisonment.
