THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.
TO THU EDITOR. Sib, —Admittedly of all others this should be above party politics ; hence, I hope to see one of the first questions on the Order Paper asking whether the recent reductions were political or departmental. In a mixed community such as ours it is very important police should be thoroughly cosmopolitan. At present Roman Catholics preponderate, more so in the inspectors’ and sergeants’ ranks. This should not be. Were a return called for and made public, it would be at once apparent that this is so, A severe trial of political strength will soon have to be made over the education question, and the police with a block vote (let alone their influence), are not to be despised. A fair share of Protestant inspectors and sergeants must be insisted upon, and where possible should be natives of New Zealand.—l am, etc.. Justice of the Peace. Dunedin, April 1.
