POSTAL CONFERENCE RESULTS.

The following are the principal alterations and innovations agreed to at the Postal Conference in Sydney, which will affect New Zealand:—lnsurance Bcheme for parcels post up to LSO to London and L2 fee Gd for every L 5. Maximum money order raised to L2O instead of HO, the new rates to be-6d for L2, Is L 3, and so on to 4s for L2O, instead of Is for L 5 and 2s for 1,10. Maximum weight of newspapers to be lOoz; fee 53. Intercolonial newspaper rates to be id; trade account and similar documents to go at book rates. New Zealand will also probably admit them at circular rates within the town limits. Intercolonial parcels post rates to be 8d for first lb and 6d for each additional lb. The present rates are la 2d for the first 21b and 7d each additional one. Book packet rates are reduced to Id for every 4oz, in place of Id every 2oz inland and Id every ounce intercolonially. With the following proposals, which were agreed to by the other colonies, New Zealand disagreed:—Names and addresses on telegrams being charged for in New Zealand (they go free up to ten words); to bank notes being sent in open paokets; to unpaid letters and packets being detained and sent back to writers; to the abolition of intercolonial cipher messages being sent at single rates; to limiting the number of words in Press messages to any paper during the day to 500.
