THE YEAR'S REVENUE.
A SATISFACTORY SURPLUS. WELLINGTON, April 1. The beer duty for the year ended March 31 was L 58.030, giving a surplus of 14,031. The receipts of last month were L 5,417, as against L 5.347 for the same month last year. Auckland contributed LI,ISO, Wellington L 578, Christchurch L 1.013, Dunedin L 1.237. The Customs duty for March was L 122713, against L 123.607 for March, 1890, and L 136.501 in February. The principal ports were—Auckland, L 29.258; Wellington, L 23.540; Christchurch, L 20.825; Dunedin, L 25.713. The receipts for the year were LI ,527,233, giving a surplus above the estimate of L 74,733. In his Statement published in January Sir H, Atkinson estimated the surplus at L 89.000, based on an anticipated receipt of L 400,000 during the first three months of this year. The receipts were not up to expectation last month. It was expected that the duties on the Rimutaka's cargo tfould have come in, but owing to the holiday they were not collected.
