The Wrong Card.

The lady was on a visit to VV&nganui Irom the South, and, amongst other thoughtful and seasonable gifts, she purchased there a neat illustrated text, indicative of her sentiments, wherewith to adorn her son-in-law’s dining room wall. It was imperatively impressed on the shopman at the time of purchase that the motto “A Happy New Year” should appear on it, and, being informed that her wishes had been given effect to, she had it packed and proceeded on her way. Arriving here late last night she retired, and very early this morning sped downstairs with the precious motto in her hands, bent on effecting a surprise. The motto being placed to her satisfaction over the mantelpiece, with the aid of a dim light and a pair of spectacles, the old lady breathlessly awaited the shout of joy that would presently follow its discovery. The shout soon came, but it was not what she expected—it was blended with rage. Hastily she appeared on the scene, and this is what met her astonished gaze, emblazoned on the card: “Be sure thy sina will find thee out.” The old lady called to say that as her family are evidently offended with her she is now lodging privately, and, ob returning home, is going to look for that good youog shopman, who will, no doubt, wish he bad died yonng alter she gives him a piece of her mind on the snbject of New Year texts.— ‘ Wanganui Herald.’
