FIRES.

The fire at Gore on Thursday morning destroyed a double shop occupied by Mr A. L. Brown, bootmaker, and Mr George Smith, seedsman. How the fire originated is a mystery. It commenced in Mr Smith’s dwelling-room behind the shop, and the only theory Mr Smith can advance is that some kindling wood that had been lying near the fireplace for the morning use must have caught fire and started the conflagration. The insurances on the building and stock are divided between two offices, Mr Brown had the building insured in the Norwich Union Insurance Company for L 175, while the stock was insured for L2OO. Mr Smith had his effects insured in the Standard Insurance Company—the stock for LBO, and the household furniture and effects for L2O. Mr Smith is a heavy loser, as the building was only erected about a year ago.
