Henry Villard, the American railway magnate, recently gave out a mysterious hint that railway operators ought to buy sparingly of locomotives on the ground that the whole system of traction is menaced by a motive power greater than steam. One of the most successful seasons, from a managerial point of view, that has been witnessed in Dunedin was brought to a close at the Princess’s last night, when ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin ’ was repeated before a crowded house. The version, although differing materially from that which playgoers have hitherto been accustomed to, seemed to bo none the less acceptable, and applause was frequently bestowed in a liberal manner. Mr Sheridan and his associates left, for Oamaru this morning.
