(Received January 6, 1891, at 11 a.m.) A bush fire in the vicinity of Condabalin, about 300 miles inland, has devastated about 120 miles of country. Twenty thousand sheep perished. The fire travelled at the rate of ten miles an hour, and if the wind had not suddenly changed nothing could have saved the township. A DEFAULTING BANK MANAGER. SYDNEY, January 6, It is stated that the defalcations of Beni nett, late manager of the Paddington branch of the English and Scottish Chartered Bank, amount to L 13.000. MORTALITY AMONG THE ISLANDERS SYDNEY, January 6. The mission vessel Southern Grose, which has arrived from the Islands, reports great mortality among the Natives of the Gilbert Group, where an epidemic of measles and dysentery has been raging. Eight cases of true leprosy have been discovered in the Penryhus Group. The Natives of the Hervey Group have been suffering from la grippe, and a large number of deaths have occurred. “GENERAL” BOOTH’S SCHEME. MELBOURNE, January 6. The Premier of Tasmania has replied to Premier Munro’s circular with reference to “ General ” Booth’s scheme, stating that he thinks it advisable to await full particulars of the scheme before entering on a discussion of it. THE CABLE TARIFF. MELBOURNE, January 6, The Chairman of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company cables as follows : “ Gist of the agreement will soon be ready, in order, if approved, that reductions may come into operation without delay.” INTERCOLONIAL CRICKET. MELBOURNE, January 6. In the match between Victoria and South Australia the latter in their first innings made 472, G. Giffen contributing 237. Victoria made 220 and 190, being beaten in one innings, with 62 runs to spare. EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS. BRISBANE, January 6. Prolonged shocks of earthquake have been experienced at Duray and Hawkswood.
