THE INDIAN RISING
(By Electric Telegraph.—Oops biqbb ] [Per Press Association.] NEW YORK, January 2. (Eeoelved Januaiy 3, 1890, at 5.40 p.m.) Advices from the Jistriots threatened by Indians state that the 7th Regiment of Cavalry was surrounded in a valley near Clay Creek by a greatly superior force, and the 9th Regiment of Cavalry arrived just in time to rescue them. The United States Government hope to induce 3,000 Indians at Badlands to peaceably surrender. Twelve regiments of infantry are now investing the disturbed districts, [Special to Press Association.] WASHINGTON. January 4. (Received January 5, IS9I, at 10.15 a.m.) The Indians will not listen to suggestions of peace, and continue their raids. The troops are gradually encircling them, and a battle is imminent. The massacre of equaws and children at Pine Ridge is confirmed. The soldiers allege that smoke prevented them from distinguishing men from women.
