BRIEF MENTION.
James Mirama and William Docherty, of the Premier Permanent Building Association, were convicted at Melbourne on the charge of conspiring to defraud the shareholders, and sentenced to twelve and eighteen months' respectively. The charge against the others were not proved. A Bill has passed the FrenchSenateenforcing the drawing up and signing of definite contracts between masters and men in all trades and industries, rendering either party to the contract liable to a claim for damages in the event of the engagement being terminated at any moment without due notice.
Germany pays Dr Koch and the assistants who worked with him in his search for the cure for consumption 3,000,000 marks for the right to make consumptive lymph. It is expected that the profits from the sale of the lymph will amount to fully 4,000,000 marks per annum. Germany pays four million marks for the concessions made by the Sultan of Zanzibar, and it is arranged that the latter maintains the sovereign rights.
