BRIEF MENTION.
The Labor Council at Home have ordered the New Zealand Shipping Company, Shaw, Savill Company, and British India Company to be boycotted for shipping sailors aboard, instead of through their offices. Charles Marvin, the authority on Russia in Asia and petroleum, is dead. Mr Balfour has introduced a Bill in the House of Commons to supply seed potatoes to the inhabitants of Ireland. Railway relief works will follow. It is understood that the Argentine Government will adopt the Committee's scheme and issue a loan for 12 millions on the security of the Customs to meet coupons. The paper currency will be reduced, and no further borrowing undertaken for three years. M. Pasteur has discovered a preventive for tubercule. The announcement that Dr Koch has discovered cures for diphtheria and tetanus is confirmed. News has been received to the effect that the Portuguese lowered the British flag at Matacus in Kraalmatica and hoisted their own. A party sent by the British South African Company surprised the Portuguese, and replaced the flag and captured two of the Portuguese leaders. In addition to hauling down the British flag, the Portuguese are reported to have invaded British territory in Africa at other points. The bank rate of interest is 5 per cent. Hemp is in poor demand, and 200 bales were sold at auction to-day. Good average quality realised L 23. Frozen meat is unchanged. The Government of Cape Colony supports the proposed mining exhibition in connection with the opening of the Imperial Institute.
