ST. CLAIR ESPLANADE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —Can anyone inform me who is the engineer engaged on the frequent public works carried out with a view to stemming the encroaching sea ? Recently a double row of scrub was planted in the sand, and the remains of the outer row may now be found stranded at intervals between St, Clair and Lawyer Head. At present old orates with clay and stones are being tipped over on the beach, but from careful observation I cannot see that the destruction is abating. Every tide leaves its marks on the wall and roadway. I am averse to criticising honest work in a right direction, bat I am satisfied that money is being wasted by this constant

pottering, and I would suggest that a public meeting of residents and others interested should ne called to consider whether something more thorough ought not to be done to render this watering place more attractive. While on the subject I would remark on the vigorous destructive works so ably carried out by children from morning to night In sliding down the sandhills and bringing down many tons weekly to the beach. Is this healthy recreation allowed or approved of 7 I heard of one boy having his name taken by the police for Indulging in this gentle sport, but I have seen no notice or official intimation on the subject, and think the public should be informed before the summer holidays come on.—l am, etc., C.W.W, St, Clair, November 10.
