MINING NOTES. Talk of the richness of Otago river beds (sayß the ' Inangahua Times') —a private dredging party at work on the Buller River, near Fern Flat, recently lodged in the Colonial Bank, Reef ton, 230z of g->ld as the produce of last week's work. The party is a small one of five or six men, and their dredge only lifts fifteen tons of stuff daily, yot in this small way of working the yield gives the party Lls per man per week. For the whole time they have had the dredge at work their earnings have averaged LlO per man per week. This is something like successful mining. Every ton of stuff raised from the river bed thus returns LI worth of gold, which is the average of several months' work. The Upper Waipori Alluvial Gold T>redging Company obtained 240z lldwt of gold for five days and six hours' dredging last week. Mr tTssher is of opinion that there will be fifteen miles of race to bring the water from Timaru Creek to Hawea Flat. The difficulties of construction and expense render the project impracticable at present. The Crocus Company, at Nenthorn, had a crashing last week, which yielded 70oz of gold from about 80 tons of stone. The Reefton battery returns for the past week were - —United Alpine, 23Goz of amalgam from 175 tonß of stone: Welcome, 2570z of amalgam from 38 tons (blankets only); No. 2 South Keep-it-Dark. 104oz of amalgam from 27 tons; Inkerman, 151oz of amalgam from 80 tons; Progress, 2630z of amalgam ; Globe, 228 oz of amalgam from 190 tons. Our Lawrence correspondent wires:—"The Island Block Company are now on a splendid run of gold, and there is every indication that the claim will turn out one of the richest on the banks of the Clutha." Mr Burton, secretary of the United Hercules Hydraulic Sluicing Company, telegraphs the resu't of Saturday's washing up as 85oz lOdwt of gold ; value, L 320 12s 6d. Mr Peters, the working manager, reports for the last four weeks that ho took about five days' sluicing in the upper line of boxes the first week, and obtained 38oz, which is the poorest return he has yet had ; but there is every indication of better wash-dirt coming in. He commenced running in the lower line of boxes on the 20th nit. On the following Sunday night the run was completely frozen up. He took thsoppirtunity afforded by the stoppage to overhaul the main pipe* and enlarge the race. He got the water through the race on the 27th ult., and had the paddock i umped out by Saturday afternoon, and aaain started sluicing. After a week's running ho wa»hed up the lower line of boxes, and obtained 95c y, of sold. He has lince be»n steadily running in the lower line. The exact returns of gold for the period ending yesterday are as follow :
