A FUTILE THREAT. SYDNEY, June 6. During a discussion in the Legislative Council as to alleged abuse of th’mr privileges by leader-writers, Mr J. E. Salomons, Q.C., intimated his intention to introduce a Bill to compel leader-writers to append their names to their articles.
REINSTATED. SYDNEY. June 6. The Divorce Bill has been restored to the Order Paper.
THE QUETTA ROCK. BRISBANE, Junk 6, H.M.S. Rambler has been engaged surveying the rock on which the Quetta foundered, and searched unsuccessfully for traces of the wreck.
THE TASMANIAN PARLIAMENT. HOBART, June G. Parliament was opened yesterday. The Governor’s Speech announces that the Estimates have been fully realised, and that there is a satisfactory surplus. Ministers '.vill propose a progressive tax on the unimproved values of land, and the remission of duties on tea, coffee, cocoa, and kerosene, and a reduction of the duty on sugar. A substantial measure of local option is also promised.
VICTORIAN POLITICS. MELBOURNE, June 6. The want of confidence motion was defeated by 54 to 35 votes.
