ORTABLE GAS.

A novelty in gas lighting has been recently 'introduced here by the firm of Gray and {Lester, a visit fe> whose establishment in St. Andrew Strcvt will be well repaid, They the representatives of Messrs l\ Iveefcy and Co., of Sydney, and the .TfcckUy which they arc now piecing before u« is au assortsuent of portable Rird other lamps, constructed for %k-z burning of Mr Keeley's ■wonderful " ceal 'p.%" Th" qualities of "this gas 'ure aiuj <."t incredible until ore Uicars ttiem describ\d and sees them actually •tc»te<d, which Messrs Gray iiud Let-tor "re always willing to oblige any visitor by doing. The "gas" ia first; shown in a liquid state—in its form of ;;;in oil. A t-'.nali reservoir at tho top of tho lamp is filled with this oil, which, passing through an ordinary metal branch, emerges from Keeley's patont burner at the end in the form of gas—and that, gas of extraordinarily high illuminating power. In addition to its light-giving power, the oil has the great advantages of being perfectly clean and remarkably safe. As instances of the first of these qualities, a person may wash hia hands in it, or sprinkle any quantity over inis clothes, 'without there a trace of it perceptible in the shape of either smell or etaia a minute afterwards. As to its safety, the strongest proof lies in the fact that a quantity spilt on a carpet, oilcloth, or «ven a sheet of paper—so long as it is on a flat surface—can be ignited with a match, and will immediately evaporate without injuring tho fabric in the slightest degree, and again without leaving smell or stain behind, It is claimed that the light produced £3 superior to that of ordinary gas, yet costs the consumer less money. It can be applied with case and at email expense to ordinary gas chandeliers, or chandeliers specially constructed for its use can bo obtained from Messrs Gray and Lester, as also can reading lumps, bracket wall lamps, and all sorts of portable lamps at prices to suit person?! of all degrees of means. The firm have already disposed of a large number, and have had to send to Sydney for a further supply.
