WHERE ARE THE POLICE?

TO THE EDITOH. Sir,—On Wednesday, the 3rd inst., we were detained in town till after eleven at night. As wo reached the Cargill road corner, our attention was attracted by loud shouts. Investigation showed us a band of larrikins, two of them drunk, fighting and swearing outside an hotel, from which they had evidently been ejected. The disturbance lasted fully half an hour, and the whole neighborhood was aroused. While this was going on wo also saw two drunken men come out of the private entranco of an hotel, at precisely twenty minutes to twelve This house, all the bar-rooms of which were lighted up, has only an eleven o'clock license. When the larrikins had been induced to separate a policeman appealed on the scene.

Last night again we were late Wc reached the Cargill road corner at half-past eleven. AH the doors of the hotels were closed, but the windows of the rooms adjoining the bars were lighted up. In a moment three men (drunk) camo out of one hotel, and six out of another. After a most disgraceful exhibition these men separated. We believe that the law on the matter is that the police have power to enter any hotel

after eleven o'clock and eject all persons not residents who are found therein. The facts we have related prove that large numbers of men aro supplied with drink after eleven o'clock in our suburban whisky shops. This sort of thing happens night after night, and the police do not interfere—We have, etc, W.R.C. T.S.S. Cavcraham, April 5.
