"Corn Exchange!" exclaimed Mrs P. " What an idea! I hain't got but one corn, and I wouldn't exchange that with anybody ; for who knows what might come along with another person's corn? Corn Exchange, indeed ! What stuff!" A clever witticism is attributed to the late Prince Imperial. When asked why people always said "brave as a sword," and never "brave as a cannon," ho replied : " Because a cannon always recoils when it is fired."
It is with some mothers, in the treatment of their children, as it is with fireworks. First the rocket, then the stick. An orator is reported as saying that "all railroads are devoted to their country—are, in fact, bound to it hy the utronr/e-it ties." When a young man in Patagonia wantsa wife he rides out and lassoes one; but in this country when a girl wants a husband, and her betrothed doesn't come to time, the lass-sues him—for breach of promise. " Too much shirt-front, and too little young man." That's what's the matter with our first-class fashionable society.
