THAT SAND CONTRACT.

TO THK EDITOII.

Sih,— As Cr Crumond at the last meeting of the Council denies Mr Calverley's statements by a general denial, we trust he will at once answer the following questions through the medium of your columns, and not " dilly-dally " with them until the next meeting of the Council in January next and there air his vituperation : 1. Did not the conditions of the tenders state that samples of the sand with a deposit of L 3 were to be lodged with each tender ?

2. Did M'Kewen, on lodging his tender, comply with such conditions ? 3. Was not Mr Mirams absent from this colony when the tenders were opened and the sand inspected ? 4. Was it to the advantage of the ratepayers that the lighter tender was accepted ? 5. Did Cr Cramond have any communication with any of the tenderers after the closing of the tenders and between the time of the first Committee rejecting and the second Committee accepting the higher tender 1

6. Will he explain on what basis the second Committee (of which he was a member) accepted such tender. As regards the remark of Cr Cramond that Mr Miraniß had reported in favor of M'Kewen's tender, we say it is false, Mr Mirams having told us before the tenders were opened that if the tender for the supply of " Calverley's sand " was the lowest the Council were bound to accept it.—We •are, etc. Geok.g& HuTCiiANdM
