SIR FREDERICK WELD.
On the 29th September last a memorable day occurred in the annals of the quiet Dorsetshire village of Chidlock, at which Sir Frederick Weld, some years ago a much respected settler in this colony and our Premier, has lately become, on the death of his elder brother Mr Charles Weld, Lord of the Manor. Sir Frederick's eldest son Humphrey—so called after his grandfather, formerly the esteemed and beloved Lord of Chidlock Manor—coming of age on that day, the tenantry took occasion to present himself and family with an address expressive of their attachment. Four hundred of the tenants, including several of the clergy and gentry of West Dorset, were subsequently entertained at dinner ; Sir Frederick Weld presiding. Tea and a dance for the young folk concluded the very pleasant proceedings. At tho dinner the healths of Sir Frederick and Lady Weld,
together with that of their son, were enthusiastically responded to. Sir Charles Clifford, whose name will also be lemembered in connection with his relative's, during his speech made allusion to the old days of New Zealand, when Sir Frederick was Premier, and to the wonderful progress of the colony subsequently.
