HINTS TO DAIRY FARMERS.
WELLINGTON, November 19,
Mr Gordon, Inspector of Mines, has furnished a report on the dairy appliances at tho Melbourne Kxhibition. Ho says that the Cherry butter worker is adopted in Victoria, and recommended by the manager of the Model Dairy. Mr Gordon also says that Mr D. Sullivan, a butter merchant of Launceston, who has been thirtytive years in tho trade, told him that New Zealand butter was inferior to Victorian and Tasmanian, because it is tinted by the white pine used for the ends of kegs, and that its appearance is thereby spoiled. He thinks that boiling the wood for twenty hours would obviate the difficulty. Mr Sullivan says that they have the same difficulty with wood for kegs in Tasmania, and recommends oak as the best material he is acquainted with, though he objects to the use of extra wrapping.'
