Eustace Frank Allen was committed for trial at Christchurch yesterday on a charge of forging a cheque on the Union Bank, Timaru, ior Lls 10s. George M'Combe, alias John M'Guire, was committed for trial at Wellington yesterday on a charge of forging the name of M‘Mennn, sbeepfarmer, to a cheque for LG 10s. A daughter of Mr Mason, of Seaward Bush, who was severely burned about four months ago while attending to domestic duties, died in the Invercargill Hospital on Saturday morning, Margaret M'Leod, a fine young woman, lost her life at Oakvale, near Maitland (N.S.W.), on the 24th nit., through her clothing catching fire. Deceased approached the fireplace at her home for some hot water, and while so engaged her dress caught the flames. She ran out of the house screaming, but was subsequently caught by some friends, who rolled her in a blanket. The lower extremities, however, were so dreadfully burned that she eventually succumbed to her injuries. Mrs Woodward, wife of G. A. Woodward, a resident of Maldon (Victoria), was burned to death under painful circumstances on the 26th ult. The deceased lady_ was fifty-four years of age, and had been ailing sometime, causing a derangement of the mind. In this state she set fire to her clothes in the bush, and was so terribly burned that she died shortly afterwards. A house tenanted by John Bennett, horsedealer, Bedford street, North Melbourne, was burned early on the 27th nit, Bennett escaped with difficulty; but his wife, an old woman aged ninety-two, was burned to a cinder.
