FIRES.

♦ A three-roomed dwelling-house near Milton was burned down on Thursday morning. It was owned and occupied by Mr Rowland Hare, a farmer, who left it at about 7 a.m. after lighting the kitchen fire as usual. Mrs Hare also left the house at 8.30 as usual to milk the cows, and on returning at 9.30 she found the kitchen in flames. With the help of some neighbors a little furniture was saved, but the house was completely destroyed. The house was insured in the Standard Office for LSO ; but the furniture was uninsured. The fire is believed to have occurred through a defect in the chimney. A stable in Timaru, occupied by Neeson, an expressman, and owned by Thomas Wells, was destroyed by fire on Thursday morning. The building was insured for LSO in the Lancashire Office. The occupier loses a quantity of harness, etc., and about 1,000 empty sacks. Two wheat stacks, the property of Mr Eli Mitchell, were destroyed by fire on his farm at Waitohi, South Canterbury, on Thursday morning. They were insured in the National Office. The fire is believed to have been the work of an incendiary. A fire broke out last night in a somewhat mysterious manner in an unoccupied fourroomed house on the Signal Hill road, Northeast Valley, owned by Mr Ruston. The house, was burnt to the ground, as also was a Email two-roomed lean-te adjoining, owned by Hr Atkinson. Mr Paulin's house was also in great danger, and was only saved by the great exertions of Mr T. Short, J. P., and Mr Adams, solicitor, Mr Cockerel!, Constable Walker, and others, who also removed nearly the whole of the furniture. Fortunately there was little wind, and but for this damage to the extent of about LI.OOO would have been caused. Mr Ruston is believed to be insured. The Salvage Corps, under Mr Godfrey Jacobs, Were at the fire, and lent valuable assistance, '
