POISONING DOGS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sik,—l don't know if you keep a watchdog to protect your property at night, or if you keep a garden for your pleasure, enjoying the sight of flowers. I do so, but I have come to the conclusion that it is totally useless. Some rascal poisoned my dog yesterday with strychnine, and my children and I lose thus a faithful friend, I can hardly suppose that it is a rascal who wants to break into the house some night, but I understand that there are a lot of fiends going about town who make it their pleasure to poison dogs. Now, about a flower garden; it is useless to cultivate same. Myself and wife have a little garden in which we used to have much pleasure, but lately we found that not only all flowers had been stolen, but even a rose tree and root had been taken away. I am now coming to the conclusion that it is of no use keeping a dog, and that the best thing I can do is to let the larrikins destroy my garden. Perhaps, sir, you can keep your garden and dog protected ; if so, kindly let me know how you manage it. I shall apply to the City Corporation for allowance to keep a loaded revolver, as otherwise it is impossible for me to protect my property and the life of my wife and children in case of any of the late rascals imported from England under the allowance of the Government there (as it appears has been done) shall give Dunedin a call for their rascally business.—l am, etc., J.H. Duncdin, April 12.
