THE ENGLISH CRICKETERS.
When we went to press yesterday Barnes and Crawshaw were well set and scoring steadily, the score standing at one wicket for CO runs. At 73 Crawshaw drove Smith hard to the on, where Shrewsbury made a brilliant left-handed catch. Mathias partnered Barnes, who at this time was playing with confidence and ease, and after a maiden or two Barnes got hard on to Smith to the off for 3, and followed this up with a leg hit off the same bowler for 5. This was the Midlander's last score, however, as after a maiden or two had been sent down and Mathias had scored a single, " Jnmbo " was grandly taken in the slips off a hard back cut by Lohmann, and retired with 39 to his credit. 84—3—39. The outgoing batsman had played very good cricket for his runs. \V. P. Reeves was not in long before he witnessed Mathias's downfall, bowled by Briggs. BS-4-1. H. Reeves partnered hjs brpther, but was almost immediately dismissed by Smith. S9—s—o. Harman joined W. P. Reeves, and soon afterwards 100 was hoisted amidst applause from the 700 or 800 present. At 105 Harman left, clean bowled by a fine leg break of Briggs's. At 107 Lohmann relieved Preston, and Canterbury's trouble began. With one run added Wilding was caught and bowled by Lohmann, and after Garrard had finished the over Reeves wa3 bowled by a short one from Briggs. 108—8 —l2. At 110 Garrard was well caught in the slips by Smith. Labatt followed Garrard's examplo, and 119—10—5 wa3 telegraphed. Macdonald joined Fowko, and, although the light was very bad, both men kept their stumpsupuntilo.SOp.m., when the total stood at 120' for ten wickets, each of the not outs claiming 3 runs. Shrewsbury at point worked like a machine. Briggs, firann, Ulyett, and Preston also worked without a mistake. Crawshaw and Barnes both played sterling cricket.
