RE SHAKESPEARIAN REPRESENTATION.
TO THE EDITOR.
gi R) _In a recent issue of the Star I noticed that a meeting had been held having for jts object the olevation of the " tone of the drama in this city, and, as a lover of the drama, I feel proud that Dunedin is again coming to the front to maintain its position as the Athens of the Southern Hemisphere; but whether a Shakespearian revival would prove remunerative, I leave more competent judges to deoide. We have periodical visits from professional companies introducing the latest novelties, with their intricate mechanism and gorgeous scenery, with which we cannot expect to compete. Would it not be advisable, therefore, to form a club not restricted to the w»rks of one particular dramatist, but including those of Goldsmith, R, B, Sheridan, Sheridan Kuowlee, and
Bulwor, moat of whoso plays are within the scope of amateurs, and for sublimity of sentiment, nobility of thought, and elegance of diction are unrivalled in our language. If produced with their costumes of a former generation, well staged, with effective scenery, and performed by capable exponents, they would, I think, attract appreciative audiences, besides assisting as an incentive to our educational system.—l am, etc., Jacques. IJunedin, March 17.
