THE LAND BOARD.

The weekly meeting held to-day was attended by the Chief Commissioner and Messrs Clark and Dallas.

In reporting on the application of the settlers at Greenvale to have section 12, block 14, and section 2, block 15, surveyed into areas of twenty acres and opened under the village settlement system, Ranger Hughan stated that the land would not be taken up under that system, and he recommended that it be opened on deferred payments or perpetual lease.—Lands to be valued, and recommended for notification by the Governor. Reporting on a letter from F. Wayne, Ranger Hughan suggested that sections 20, block 9, and 27, 29, and 30, block 8, Akatore, be withdrawn from sale, as they are the only sections in the neighborhood on which there is any timber of value.—Resolved accordingly. Thomas Gillespie applied to purchase a small portion of bush reserve section north of section 18, block 9, Warepa, at 20s per acre.—Approved, subject to payment of survey fees. In reference to Welbrook and Grievo's application to have sections 18 and 19, block 7, Kelso, opened as suburban lands at L 3 per acre, Ranger Hughan tecommended that these and the adjoining Lections 20 to 23 be dealt with in that way.—Sections to be classified as suburban land with the apy oval of the Governor, and opened at an of L3per acre. "Thomas Matheson applied that section 4, block 10, Shotover, be opened on deferred payments or perpetual lease under clause 9 of the new Act.—Land to be classified and recommended for notification.

M. Morton applied for the lease of section 7, block 6, Rock and Pillar. In reference to this the warden at Naseby advised that, as mining was being carried on on the section, it should on no account be leased.—The application was declined.

The N.Z.L. and M.A. Company applied for permission to surrender the lease of Run 433, Upper Hawea. They had given up working this run, as they had lost a considerable sum by r.ms in that locality.— Referred for consideration of the Government.

Messrs Pile and Hill renewed their application to be allowed to reside off their per-petual-lea&e sections 20, block 7, ar>d 3, block 10, Blackstone. If the request were not granted the applicants asked that their leases should be forfeilsd.—Leases forfeited accordingly; land to be re-opened for application.

Reporting on an application by Allan Mann, John Carr, and B. Hallinan to purchase land in blocks 9 and 11, Maungatua, Ranger Hughan recommended that Hal'.inan's application be granted, that the land between the water-race and the creek be reserved, that the land between Mann's freehold and Carr's application be divided between the applicanti, and that the portion of Mann's application north of the creek be surveyed into sections of five acres e..eh and sold by auction.—The ranger's suggestions were approved of. Referring to his recent application for 600 acre 3 on Run 23b, John Smith intimated that he was prepared to give a good price for the land under the small grazing run system, as the area referred to adjoined his land.—Referred for the consideration of Government.

J. H. Chalmers applied for 350 acres north of and adjoining section 6, block 4, Kurow, as a small graz ; ng run, and offered 9d an acre for the urea, which is part of Run 23b.—Forwarded for consideration of Government.

Ranger Shaw forwarded an application by Charles Ahfield for permission to fence and occupy Crown lands in Clyde township, behind blocks 32 to 36.—Declined.

Mr Simpson, on behalf of Robert Stewart, lessee of Runs 330 and 345 a, asked permission to surrender the leases, the present rental being excessive. Referred for the consideration of the Government.

Mr Simpson asked that James Melvin's licences of Runs 330 a and 330b be cancelled, as he cannot pay the rental, viz., Ll,Oil. — Referred fer the consideration of the Government.

James Spedderi applied to purchase fifty acres on Run 225e, Highfield, adjoining section 6, block 1, Gimmerburn.— Approved, subject to the alteration in the form of application recommended by the district land officer.

In forwarding an application by W. Pyle to purchase ten acres of Run 228, with the runholder's consent, the warden at Naseby stated that he could not recommend the granting of the application, as there was reason to believe that the land is auriferous. —The application was declined. Ranger Hughan recommended that sixteen acres, being the north-east portion of section 2, block 6, Clarendon, be reserved on account of the coal contained therein.— Section withdrawn from sale.

In reply to a communication from the Board suggesting that his section 1, block 7, Lower Hawea, be made a small grazing run, D. M'Lennan intimated that if he acted upon the suggestion he would lose his improvements; and he asked the Board to re-oonsider their decision with regard to his application for a grant of the central 100 acres, and to license the balance (200 acres) for grazing.—Adjourned for a fortnight. Mr W. D. Smith, on behalf of James Matheson, applied for permission to surrender perpetual leases 75 and 93, Mount Hyde, as he could not continue to pay the rent.—-Surrender accepted; arrears of rent to be deducted from valuation; to be reoffered at a capital value of 20s. Elizabeth Donnelly, lessee of sections 9 and 10, block 5, Lauder, and Francis Donnelly, lessee of sections 12 and 13, block 5, Lauder, applied to exchange their perpetual leases for deferred-payment licenses.—Consideration deferred for a week. P. M'Cluskey asked for an extension of time in which to pay up the rent owing by him on section 1, blook 4, Maniototo.—J. Stewart made a similar application in regard to his rent of section 20, block 9, Tuapeka West. Consideration of these applications was adjourned for a week. Mr Mondy appeared to show cause why the coal-mining lease granted to Mr Geddes should not be determined on Mr Sutherland's application. Consideration of the matter was adjourned for a fortnight,
