CAVERSHAM LICENSING COMMITTEE.
This body met last evening to decide as to the license of the Carlton Hotel, Darley. Those present were Messrs Todd (in the chair), Jones, Wright, and Craig. The Chairman said: There is an application here from Robert Bryant and his wife for a transfer of the licente of the Carlton Hotel, Darley, to Alexander Graham. _ The committee have considered this application, and they have come to the conclusion that they cannot grant it. The owner of the house, Mr Neill, of Dunedin, has, through his solicitor, Mr Anderson, applied for the license. The committee feel very strongly in regard to this house, and, while they are willing to grant the license to Mr Neill during the remainder of this quarter, they have to express their opinion as to whether the house is really required in the district or not. In all probability the committee will take extreme measures at the annual meeting as to the withdrawing of the license altogether from this house. I don't say that this will actually be done, but the feeling of the committee at present is very strong'y in that dir:cti< j, on the ground that that licented home is not required in the neighborhood. The committee mention this lest Mr Neill should go to any expense in repairing and painting the house, and then in the course of a few weeks find that hii house is shut up. Tha license will be granted to Mr Neill up to the end of this quarter. That is all the business before us at present.
