SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

Cruchfield has not incurred a penalty of 71b for the Canterbury Great Autumn Handicap, but one of 51b, This brings his weight up to 7st 71b. St. Clair has by winning the Burke Memorial Stakes incurred a penalty of 3lb for the Great Autumn Handicap, bringing his weight up to Gst 101b. St. Clair will be in Ted Cutt's charge for the remainder of the season.

The ‘ Referee’s ’ travelling correspondent writes that at Palmerston North on Tuesday, the well-known metallician Teddy Yuille was up at the R.M. Court on a charge of assaulting one George Hescott, in the Club Hotel. The plaintiff alleged that Mr Yuille had laidhim" a stiff ’uu ” —Volcano—for the Melbourne Cup, and his refusal to pay led to the defendant “ landing him one” under the chin. Yuille was fined LI and 36s costs for the assault, but the Bench declined to bind him over to keep the peace, contending that Hescott had provoked the assault. I should think that the continual additions to the swarm of race meetings that are carried on in the immediate vicinity of Christchurch will soon cause the totalisator to be done away with. The latest is the “Canterbury Trotting Club,” which purposes holding races on the old Agricultural Show Ground, and the first gathering is fixed for the 7th pros. It is rumored that this club will give a big stake, probably L3OO or L4OO, for competition at a meeting to be held in the spring. The executive of the Heathcote Club talk of following suit.

There seems to be less cause than ever for wonder that Mr Saunders’s horse, The Shah, fell dead recently through over-racing. A Northern writer says' ‘ Hemust have had a great heart, a good constitution, and a grand set of legs. His owner’s instructions to his jockey whenever he was stripped for a race were; ‘ Let him rip.’” A Canterbury jockey, who recently had occasion to visit a small race meeting down South, is entertaining his Riccarton friends with some amusing accounts of the vagaries of a Gaelic judge. After the race for the principal event, the youngster asserts, the clerk of the course rode up to the judge and asked which horse had won, The occupant of the “chair” hesitated for a few moments, and then, removing his clay from between his lips, and pointing with its stem to a mutual acquaintance on the opposite side of the course, exclaimed : “ I’m if I know ; ask Bill M'Cormick.” An offer of LSOO for Dudu, the winner of the Wanganui Cup, has been declined by Mr Keith,

Maniac gave one of the best exhibitions of trotting wo (‘ Canterbury Times ’) have ever seen in New Zealand at Timaru last week. He won the Three-mile Trot in Bmin 37sec ; but in estimating the value of this performance, it must bo remembered that the track was terribly rough, and the horse was going at little better than half-pace during the last mile. On the second day he covered the two miles in smin 20sec, which, supposing the distance to be correct, constitutes the record for the colony, and is only 7see behind the Australian record held by the imported Honesty, Mr H. IMper was brought before the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Cjub last week to answer a charge of touting Mr Stead’s training at Yaldnurst, but the inquiry was adjourned for the production of further evidence.

Quibble was attacked by blood fever a few days before the South Canterbury meeting, and will probably not race again this season. Peoascs.

The following are the opening sentences of a “ leader ” that appeared sometime in January in the columns of an “out West” paper that was going “ baldheaded ” for its journalistic rival:—“Of the beastly, outrageous, disgusting, unnatural, degenerate, deformed, ill-gotten, misconceived, unlawful, illegitimate, diabolical, hypochondriacal, incongruous, nonsensical, heterogeneous, heteroclitical, dough - beaded, brain-spavined, idiotic, enidish, incomprehensible, conglomeration of typographical bulls ever perpetrated upon an innocent and unoffending public, the indescribable mass appearing in the Boise City ‘ Republican ’ of recent date takes the cake.”
