A .singular illustration has just occurred of the difficulties thrown in the way of commerce between England and America in the history of Mr Henry Irving’s plum pudding. Wishing to entertain the members of his company in the old English fashion, Mr Irving imported a plum pudding, which weighed 271b. The Customhouse officials treated it as a very serious matter. First, they demanded the payment of a duty of mini. When this was tendered, they asked for the execution of a bond, to bo signed by responsible persons, in order to protect the United States against the risk of any articles upon which a higher duty should be paid being smuggled inside the pudding. The Christmas dinner was kept waiting for four hours for the pudding, which proved to be excellent eating. Marriages arc not allowed in Russia before the male is eighteen and the female sixteen, nor arc men over eighty or women over sixty permitted to enter wedlock. A fourth marriage is illegal.
