ST. CLAIR SWIMMING TOURNAMENT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,—Your correspondent “Competitor ” deserves great credit for his suggestion rc the St. Clair swimming tournament. As an old member of the London Serpentine Swimming Club, and one who, in a humble manner, strongly supports universal instruction in this necessary art, I strongly support “Competitor” in his suggestion that the whole arrangements should be readjusted. The prises and entrance fees should bo definitely stated, both for male and female races ; the entrance fee, as published, in every case being strictly adhered to. I have been informed on reliable authority that in some cases, owing to a lack of entries, the fee has been reduced at the last moment, in order to obtain a fair amount of starters. Again, as regards the prizes in the female races not being defined, I contend it opens a loophole for unfair treatment, in this way : Miss A is a friend or relative of some of the Committee, but Miss B. is not. If Miss B. wins, the prize—not having been namedamounts to 2s fid ; but if Mias A. wins, then it may possibly turn out that in her case the reward may consist of 20s. This should not be, and if the Committee really wish to obtain the assistance of the public in promoting swimming they must have everything fair and above board. Trusting they will act on “ Competitor’s ” suggestion—l am, etc., Natatok. Dunedin, February 20.
to the editor. g lUi _Xhrough your medium, might I suggest to the Committee of the ladies’ swimming tournament that the best event of last season’s matches was the plate diving contest, which I think would be a good item on the programme for the coming ladies’ swimming tournament.— I am, etc.. Competitor, Dunedin, February 20.
