THE SILVER PEAKS RUNS.

TO THE EDITOR, Sir, —No doubt it will be fresh iu the minds of moat people that a few years ago the Silver Peaks runs were cut up and offered for sale in the usual manner ; and it will also be remembered that certain men bought all the runs in at any price, because they had nothing to lose, and that subsequently it became necessary to hold an inquiry into alleged dummyhm. Perhaps it is not generally known that the men who then got those runs have been unable to hold them, and that the Government have quietly taken the runs off their hands on condition that they pay back rent. These men ere now going quietly to work, and are arranging to get back the whole of this most valuable grazing country—l think over 30,000 acres —on the former terms on Which they held them, namely, a nominal rental. The public arc kept in the dark as regards the disposal of these valuable public properties, which arc so close to Dunedin, Waikouaiti, and the Taicri. The runs are splendidly grassed, well sheltered, with an abundance of water, I hope, sir, that you, or others interested in the welfare of the Colony, will give publicity to the disposal of these runs, which, I think, will take place this month. It docs seem to me a monstrous shame that one or two men should be allowed, through certain influence, to quietly grab for next to nothing such a valuable portion of the public o-tate.—l am, etc., Settler. Dunedin, February 18.
