What Dhuleep Singh has Received from England.

* The London correspondent of the ‘ Manchester Guardian’ writes I have just seen a statement of the claims of Dhuleep Singh on the British Government, showing the amounts which have actually been paid to him over and above the pensions to himself and family. These latter amounted to 400,000 rupees a year up to 1860. Since then the amount has been 450,000. In 1803 and 1867 he got loans from Government of LIO.OOO and L 28,000 respectively. In 1875 iris life was insured for LIOO,OOO, Government paying half the cost; and between 1875 and 1879 he received loans of LIO,OOO and L 3,000, on neither of which did he pay any interest. In 1882 a private Act of Parliament was passed to put his affairs in order, and he received a loan of L 47,000,

without interest, making in all L 303.000 beyond the pensions. The Act authorised the abandonment of the claims for interest in respect of the various loans, guaranteed the maintenance of the premiums on the insurance policies for LIOO.OOO, the Maharajah paying half, and assured the interest of L 200,000 to the late Maharanee and of L 172,000 among the younger children. These figures, it is said, dispose of the Maharajah’s case in regard to his claim for the pension agreed to at Lahore in 1849, They leave, however, the national State claim untouched.
