The cricket match between a New South Wales Eleven and Vernon’s team was commenced at Sydney yesterday. The weather was fine, but the attendance was not good. The New South Wales team is not a strong one, neither Ferris nor Moses taking part in the game. A good wicket was prepared, hut it played rather slow. The Englishmen were the first to go to the -wickets, and when play was stopped for the day had lost seven wickets for 297 runs. The highest scorers were Read (119), O’Brien (-15), Abel (84), Peel (27), and Newton (17). At the Wairarapa races yesterday Freebooter won the hurdles, Kangaroo having ran inside a post; Forester appropriated the Telegraph Stakes ; Smooth the Wairarapa Handicap, with The Shah second and Revoke third; and Lancer the Grand Stand Handicap. The annual race between the Otago and Invercargill Rowing Clubs will take place in the Upper Harbor on Friday, 24th inst., at about ten or eleven o’clock. Considerable interest is taken in the event in rowing circles, and both clubs are making every effort to win. The Invercargill Club’s boat arrived by the s.s. Invercargill this morning, the crow to arrive here next Wednesday. The local crew have been prevented by the rough weather during the past week from getting as much practice as could be desired. Taking advantage, however, of the fine water last night, they indulged in a good spin of six miles, under the command of Mr C. Brauigan. With attention to detail the crew, which is a very powerful one, ought to give an excellent account of itself in the race.

Rain set in at an early hour this morning, but not with sufiicicnt severity to interfere with training operations, while the course will be much benefited by the moisture. Tetford, who is improving rapidly, covered the Cup distance at top, going in excellent style and pleasing Ida supporters greatly. Garibaldi went two miles, a strong gallop, and finishing fast. Aprils Moi and Dodger were sent six furlongs together at a good pace. The filly shaped very well, and should pick up a good stake during the autumn season. Cutts gave Ravenswing a smart spin over five furlongs. Torrent put in a good gallop, going two miles fast with the Fleur-de-Lys gelding as a companion the last round. Butler sent his Champagne candidates, Manton and Adulation, six furlongs at racing pace, both youngsters acquitting themselves creditably. Artillery did a satisfactory two-mile gallop, Secretary taking him along for the first mile, and the Cup horse shaped well in the soft ground. Quibble, with Derritt up, went fully the Cup distance at top, Sultan bringing him home the last part of the journey at a rare pace. Mr Sherwiu’a horse went in capital style. St. Clair was treated to a mile and a half fast, Haka accompanying him for a mile, and then being joined by Wolverine, who brought them along at the finish. Dan O’Brien sent his youngsters Carbine and Vandal about a mile at three-quarter speed, while Rose and Black did steady work, Springston and Captain Cook were started off together for the Cup distance, and after covering a mile Ruby and Shifnal joined in, the quartet finishing the journey together. Mr Webb’s pair, and especially Springston, do their work in fine style. La Rose was given a serviceable gallop, while Chic and Occident, after cantering nearly a mile, were sent a four-fnrlong spin at racing pace. Dick Mason’s lot were looked for with great interest, and the appearance of the Cup favorite, Gipsy King, was eagerly scanned. Ho covered a couple of rounds steady in good form, and seems to be in tip-top condition. Count d’Orsay went a strong gallop over about a mile, and Matamata followed suit. Ravenscraig wont twice round at half pace. Dunluce was treated to two miles fast, with Louis Philippe as a companion for the last round. Mon Loup, Sir Julius, and Derby put in serviceable work. R. Mason arrived last night with Mr Stead’s ' Gipsy King, Rassley, Matamata, and Count d’Orsay. The hurdle-racers Mammoc and Reputation also put in an appearance. “ Senex " predicts that the Dunedin Cup will be fought out by Gipsy King and Quibble.
