Mr Eyre played the Bishop Gambit against Mr Taine, and has now a rook for two pawns, and should have no difficulty in winning. Mr M'Caffey played the Guiocopiano with Mr Irwin, and has gained a pawn, the positions being about equal. Mr Heath and Dr Stenhouse indulged in an irregular opening, and the forces are at present exactly equal. Mr Stewart ventured the Allegaier against Dr Fitchett, which the latter defended so successfully that he is left with a piece to the good and a position which should be a win.

Mr Throp played the Guiocopiano with Mr Bennett, the game being at present about equal. Mr Angus also opened the same with Mr Willcox, the forces on both sides being as even as possible. Mr Edward adopted the French defence against Dr Wanless, and has a pawn ahead, the positions being otherwise equal. So far the local team have slightly the best of the encounter. The match will be continued next Wednesday evening. Mr Lubecki kindly facilitated the arrangements, and Mr W. Heeney operated in his usual effective style. Messrs H. Allen and Oscar David did good service as umpire for Invercargill and scrutineer respectively.
